Golf Vancouver

While most BC residents think of Vancouver as a big city with its nightlife and shopping, it also has an excellent range of golf courses, many within a short distance of downtown.  This means that your business trip or getaway weekend can easily accommodate a round of golf.  As a bonus, many Vancouver courses are open year round. 

Vancouver golf courses include both mountain courses and parkland courses.  Furry Creek, about  40 minutes north of Vancouver on the road to Whistler, is arguably one of Canada’s most scenic courses.  It’s 14th hole is set out into the waters of Howe Sound, toping the list of photogenic golf holes.  Another Vancouver mountain course is Westwood Plateau, about 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver.  It’s views of the Fraser Valley and the North Shore Mountains are awe inspiring and the service at the course is first rate.

Other Vancouver area courses are set on the flatter areas of the Fraser Valley.  About 35 minutes to the south of Vancouver, close to the US border, Morgan Creek, designed by well-known Canadian designer Thomas McBroom,  plays to 6,968 yards over gently rolling terrain but the North Shore Mountains are clearly in the background.   A little closer to downtown, and not far from the Airport, Mayfair Lakes offers 6,641 yards of parkland interspersed with ponds and streams.  Mayfair Lakes was designed by Canadian Les Furber, a student of Robert Trent Jones and as its name implies, water hazards abound.

There are a number of courses to the East of Vancouver.  Meadow Gardens is a 7,041 yard course also designed by Les Furber, featuring a unique 18th hole, with 3 separate islands. Redwoods, as its name implies, is set amongst a forest of giant redwood trees.  Canadian architect Ted Locke managed to fit 6,516 yards into this luxuriant setting.  Northview, home of the Air Canada PGA Championship for a number of years, is also set amongst giant trees in Surrey.  Arnold Palmer designed the 6900 yard Ridge course to bring out the drama and excitement of a round.  The 7,101 yard Canal course is the more difficult of the two, and brings its own challenges to a round.
